Round Table Discussion on July 28th 2011









To let you know that the artist roundtable discussion at the US Embassy yesterday went very well and longer than planned... there is much more to discuss with artists and public audiences to get the arts into the forefront and recognized in TZ society. The US Ambassador viewed the exhibit and talked with TZ artists and several news media were in attendance. Artist attendants were Fred Halla, Kiagho Kilonzo, Mosses Luhanga, Shama Jaffer and Al-karim Panjwani - the new network leadership of Dar; and Seif Soud, Hamza Ausiy and Ussi Hassan - the new network leadership of Zanzibar, as well as Vivian Shalou of Basata, and Gadi Ramadhani, Sauda Simba, Margarete M, and John Kigano of the cultural sector and Martin Nagy from Toledo -  Executive Director & International Arts Consultant,  Arts Council Lake Erie West.

Exhibition of 27 U.S. Ohio Artists & Artist Workshops

          The Public Affairs Office of the United States Embassy/Tanzania in collaboration with its partners in Tanzania -  The Tanzania US State Alumni Association (TUSSA), Tanzania Women Artists Network (TZWAN), the Great Lakes Consortium for International Training and Development (GLC), and the Arts Council Lake Erie West of NW Ohio – USA is presenting an exhibition of twenty-seven (27) U.S. artists and artist workshops open to men and women artists free of charge at the Alliance Francaise Cultural Center, Ali Hassan Mwinyi Road, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, under the auspices of the Visual Arts Initiative (VAI) to showcase U.S. visual arts and artists.  The exhibition is free and open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 20:00 p.m. July 11-15, 2011.  Artists may register for the workshops by email to:  shama_jaffer@hotmail.com.
          The U.S. exhibition is part of a project that includes interactive educational and outreach programming (e.g. master classes, workshops, lectures, collaborative art projects, etc.) to instruct artists on the business of art and preparation for international markets, as well as to facilitate dialogue and engagement with local audiences in the Dar es Salaam, Tanga, and  Zanzibar areas.
          Artists from Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo and surrounding cities are invited to participate in hands-on artist workshops at no charge to be held at the Alliance Francaise Cultural Center and conducted by U.S. artist, Martin Nagy, of Toledo, Ohio USA, a well-known and highly qualified American artist and arts trainer who has a rich knowledge of the world of arts of both Tanzania and USA. 
          The workshops will be held Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m.  Registration is limited to seventy-five (75) men and women on Tuesday and Wednesday, and from the seventy-five (75)  persons, fifteen (15) will be selected to attend the Focus Group Workshops on Thursday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. to receive additional training for continued development of the arts community.

Tuesday’s Workshop includes a morning power-point presentation and discussion with artists to help make works appealing to international consumers including: color choices, design, creativity, quality of materials, presentation, framing and packaging.  After the lunch break, the afternoon session includes a power-point presentation and discussion with artists to help present and market works to the immediate public visiting consumer and to the international market through exhibitions, galleries and wholesale markets with the use of technology to promote their work, engage others in events and activities, and build networks to advance their profession.  On Monday and Tuesday, artist will jointly paint a community mural.
                Wednesday’s morning workshop includes a power-point presentation and discussion with artists focusing on marketing techniques including: ‘telling their story’ to demonstrate ‘value’ and connect with the consumer, appropriate tagging and pricing of artwork, artist’s biographies, signage, display and use of technology.  After the lunch break, the afternoon session includes hands-on framing and presentation of artwork, as well as discussion and creation of plans to develop connections with and/or establish cooperative framing and packaging resources.
          Thursday’s Focus Group Sessions from 10:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. will assist the fifteen (15) artists selected by the group with planning, developing and operating an arts organization and networks possibly leading to creation and management of an NGO; and the use of technology for marketing and networking through websites, Facebook, etc.
Friday’s Focus Group Sessions from 10:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. will continue with plans for program continuation, evaluation, and next steps to insure artist development in the community. 
          The Arts Council Lake Erie West is a nonprofit (NGO/USA) regional arts organization providing spaces, programs and services around Toledo, Ohio USA since 1983 that builds community, increases cultural participation, celebrates the arts and engages people in arts experiences.
