MANY Tanzanian artists have expressed satisfaction with the ‘arts management training’ saying it was important for the development their career.
The training held on Saturday at the People’s Palace Museum in the stone town was organized by the American based DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the Kennedy Centre.
“This has been a vital seminar particularly to the upcoming artists, such training should continue,” said Masoud Salim, chairperson of the Zanzibar Youth Network, after the training conducted by the centre’s president Michael Kaiser.
Artists Mustafa from Dar es Salaam and Farid Humud from Zanzibar also joined in to convey their appreciation to the Kennedy centre saying skills in arts management would help many artists move ahead.
Artist Sharifa Juma from Zanzibar had the opinion that the period of only ‘one day’ was insufficient and also “an interpreter was important to be present at the training for better understanding of the local artists.”
English was used at the seminar. The seminar participants mainly artists from Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and Arusha listened and heard Michael Kaiser discuss skills about strategic and artistic planning, programmes and arts marketing and fund-raising.
The minister responsible for culture and sports Abdillah Jihad, and the officials from the US embassy in Tanzania were also present at the arts management seminar.
Artist Kheri Yussuf, international fellow trained by the Kennedy centre, who coordinated the seminar, thanked all participants and Kaiser saying, “it was a rare opportunity for many artists in the county to learn about arts management.”
For over ten years as president of John F. Kennedy Centre for the performing Arts, Kaiser has seen the expansion of the educational and artistic programming for the nation's centre.
For his work with numerous institutions, Kaiser has travelled to Argentina, China, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Israel, Hungary, Mexico, the Palestinian Territories, Pakistan, Portugal, Romania, South Africa and the United Kingdom earning international recognition for his expertise in arts management.
The DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the Kennedy Centre, formerly the Kennedy Centre Arts Management Institute, was founded by Kaiser in 2001 and offers practical training to arts managers and board members at all stages of professional development in the United States and around the world.
