At the event of:American Independence Celebration Honors Tanzanian Youth

In celebration of the 236th anniversary of American Independence, United States Ambassador to Tanzania Alfonso E. Lenhardt hosted a reception at his residence on June 27 in Dar es Salaam. The theme for this year's celebration centered around youth leaders as the future of Tanzania. The youth were represented by primary and middle school student winners of an essay contest - around the theme of "what democracy means to me," and an art contest - with the theme of "the leader I most admire." The evening also included performances by a U.S. Navy Band, the Kijitonyama Lutheran Youth Choir, and concluded with a spectacular fireworks display. AMBASSADOR PRESENTS AWARDS TO ART AND ESSAY COMPETITION WINNERS

On the eve of U.S. Independence Day on July 4, the United States Embassy in Dar es Salaam partnered with Tanzanian youth through several outreach programs that celebrate their ideas and potential as future leaders of Tanzania.On June 25, Ambassador Lenhardt hosted an award ceremony at the U.S. Embassy for six Tanzanian youth winners of an essay contest titled "What Democracy Means to Me," and an art contest titled "The Leader I Admire." The Ambassador congratulated and presented certificates and cash awards to the winners, who included English Access Micro-scholarship Program students Lisa Geophrey, John D. Tinuga, and Ninah Mangesho for the essay contest. The Access Program's length is two years and aims to improve English language skills in talented students between the ages of 14 through 18. The art contest winners included Makongo Primary School students Pascal Timothy, Daniel Charles, and Laurent Haji - all of whom selected Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere as the leader they admired most and painted pictures of him. The winning essays and paintings will be featured as centerpieces at the Ambassador's Fourth of July reception. In his remarks, Ambassador Lenhardt noted, "this is indeed an exciting and challenging time to be a Tanzanian youth . . . we believe in you. You will carry Tanzania into the middle of this century and that is no small responsibility. Roundtable Pictures

The Public Affairs Office Dar es Salaam, Tanzania successfully held exhibitions of 27 U.S. Ohio artists and workshops under the auspices of the Visual Arts Initiative (VAI), and in collaboration with its partners, the Tanzania Alumni Association (TUSSA), Tanzania Women Network (TZWAN), the Great Lakes Consortium for Training for International Development (GLC), and the Arts Council Lake Erie West of N W Ohio - USA. The arts exhibitions and workshops took place from July 4 - 28, in Tanga, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, Tanzania. On July 29, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Charles F. Werderman welcomed to the U.S. Embassy participants for an exhibition and artist roundtable discussion. Representatives from the National Museums of Tanzania, the Tanzania Arts Council (BASATA) and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Tourism and Culture took part in a roundtable discussion. The exhibitions and workshops received coverage in the local media.

Round Table Discussion on July 28th 2011

To let you know that the artist roundtable discussion at the US Embassy yesterday went very well and longer than planned... there is much more to discuss with artists and public audiences to get the arts into the forefront and recognized in TZ society. The US Ambassador viewed the exhibit and talked with TZ artists and several news media were in attendance. Artist attendants were Fred Halla, Kiagho Kilonzo, Mosses Luhanga, Shama Jaffer and Al-karim Panjwani - the new network leadership of Dar; and Seif Soud, Hamza Ausiy and Ussi Hassan - the new network leadership of Zanzibar, as well as Vivian Shalou of Basata, and Gadi Ramadhani, Sauda Simba, Margarete M, and John Kigano of the cultural sector and Martin Nagy from Toledo -  Executive Director & International Arts Consultant,  Arts Council Lake Erie West.
