On October 4, PAO met with Ms. Shama Jaffer and Mr. Al-karim Panjwani, embassy partners in the Visual Arts Initiative program held in July 2011 sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, to discuss their upcoming Art Biennale program in November. Ms. Jaffer presented the U.S. Embassy with one of her paintings and art catalogues of her Art Biennale program. Following their meeting, Ms. Banks introduced them to Movie Afternoon Program guests who viewed the 1995 film "My Family" to promote Hispanic Heritage History Month, and they held a discussion on Tanzania's own rich cultural diversity as presented in the film and the importance of promoting the voices of artists through the arts.
Ms. Jaffer also discussed her aspirations to empower Tanzanian artists through art and entrepreneurship programs such as the Visual Arts Initiative. "I believe that it is important for all Tanzanian artists, and very especially women, to find their voices through the arts. Our vision is to ensure every woman feels strengthened to stand on her own, speak with her own voice, enhance her education, and thereby contribute to our nation's development. Artists are already poised to speak for many, and to do so they need greater support from other Tanzanians," she said. In her remarks, Ms. Banks recognized Ms. Jaffer as a Tanzanian patriot and role model for other Tanzanian artists whom she continues to impact and inspire to promote their voices through art.
Ms. Jaffer has previously organized two major Art Exhibitions in Tanzania that promoted the works of over 100 Artists. Ms Jaffer was recently elected to be one of the leaders of the Dar es Salaam Artist Network - a network that was formed after a Visual Arts Training that gave training to over 200 Tanzanian local artists and which was carried out in July, 2011.

The Public Affairs Office Dar es Salaam, Tanzania successfully held exhibitions of 27 U.S. Ohio artists and workshops under the auspices of the Visual Arts Initiative (VAI), and in collaboration with its partners, the Tanzania Alumni Association (TUSSA), Tanzania Women Network (TZWAN), the Great Lakes Consortium for Training for International Development (GLC), and the Arts Council Lake Erie West of N W Ohio - USA. The arts exhibitions and workshops took place from July 4 - 28, in Tanga, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, Tanzania. On July 29, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Charles F. Werderman welcomed to the U.S. Embassy participants for an exhibition and artist roundtable discussion. Representatives from the National Museums of Tanzania, the Tanzania Arts Council (BASATA) and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Tourism and Culture took part in a roundtable discussion. The exhibitions and workshops received coverage in the local media.

Visual Arts Initiative Program Promotes Tanzanian Artists

From July 4 through 28, U.S. Embassy Dar es Salaam successfully held Visual Arts Initiative (VAI), exhibitions and workshops featuring the work of 27 American artists from Ohio. The VAI programs in Tanga, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar were held in collaboration with the Tanzania U.S. State Alumni Association (TUSSAA), Tanzanian Women Artists' Network (TZWAN), Great Lakes Consortium for Training for International Development (GLC), the Alliance Francaise, and the Arts Council of Lake Erie, Ohio. The hands-on artist workshops were provided free-of-charge for over 200 local Tanzanian artists. The programs were led by Mr. Martin Nagy of Toledo, Ohio, an American artist and instructor with knowledge of the arts in the United States and Tanzania.

On July 28, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Charles F. Werderman welcomed an exhibition and artists' roundtable discussion to the U.S. Embassy. Participants included representatives from the National Museums of Tanzania, the Tanzania Arts Council (BASATA) and Tanzanian Ministry of Natural Resources, Tourism and Culture, and members of the Tanzanian media. "We congratulate you because your work honors the golden legacy left by your ancestors through the generations. The American people are proud to partner with you in the Visual Arts Initiative Program. From Dar es Salaam to Tanga, and Zanzibar you have promoted the unique cultural values of Tanzania," Mr. Werderman said.
The exhibitions showcased U.S artists and art as part of a project which included interactive educational and outreach programming for Tanzanian artists. These consisted of master classes, workshops, lectures, collaborative art projects, and other interactive teaching tools to instruct artists on marketing techniques for domestic and international markets. Participants also learned from Mr. Nagy how to "tell their stories," demonstrate "value," connect with the consumer, and use appropriate tagging and pricing of artworks, artists' biographies, signage, display, and technology. Of special impact, the VAI's facilitated dialogue and engagement with local audiences in the three cities and provided a forum for artists to meet and establish a national network to promote Tanzanian art from different regions. Each VAI concluded with artists painting a community mural in each city.
Fifteen artists were selected among the 200 participants to attend special "Focus Group Discussions" where they received additional professional development training. The sessions assisted participants with planning, developing, and operating grassroots arts organizations and networks, including establishment and management of art NGOs.
Participants in all three locations expressed common goals for increased support and recognition for artists and their work, and promotion of arts education programs for children of all ages in schools and communities.
The Visual Arts Initiative Program is funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.
To let you know that the artist roundtable discussion at the US Embassy yesterday went very well and longer than planned... there is much more to discuss with artists and public audiences to get the arts into the forefront and recognized in TZ society. The US Ambassador viewed the exhibit and talked with TZ artists and several news media were in attendance. Artist attendants were Fred Halla, Kiagho Kilonzo, Mosses Luhanga, Shama Jaffer and Al-karim Panjwani - the new network leadership of Dar; and Seif Soud, Hamza Ausiy and Ussi Hassan - the new network leadership of Zanzibar, as well as Vivian Shalou of Basata, and Gadi Ramadhani, Sauda Simba, Margarete M, and John Kigano of the cultural sector and Martin Nagy from Toledo - Executive Director & International Arts Consultant, Arts Council Lake Erie West.
